Massive haul of expired seafood seized in Palma amid serious food safety breach
Authorities have uncovered a shocking quantity of expired and refrozen seafood from a Palma distributor, prompting heavy fines and raising serious food safety concerns
You might want to think twice before grabbing that seafood platter. Authorities in Palma recently seized a staggering 20 tons of expired fish and seafood from a food distributor, with some of the products dating as far back as 2019.This wasn’t just a case of forgotten stock. The company’s managers had actually refrozen large quantities of seafood after the refrigeration chain was broken, a practice that clearly puts consumer health at serious risk.
The crackdown happened last April, when the Civil Guard and health officials from the Balearic Islands conducted an inspection. As a result, all compromised food was immediately pulled out of circulation to keep it from reaching shops or restaurants.
The distributor now faces fines totalling €90,000 for two very serious violations of food safety laws following a prolonged failure to meet basic hygiene and food storage standards.
