Playa Babilonia / Platja de la Babilònia in Guardamar del Segura
A semi-urban, semi-rural beach alongside the picturesque dunes of Guardamar
The Playa Babilonia lies in front of the dunes and vegetation of the Parque Alfonso XIII in the northern part of the town of Guardamar, close to the town centre but, at the same time, in surroundings which take visitors back to the way beach visits must have felt decades ago.
Running alongside the beach is a row of small old houses which bear no relation at all to modern sun and sand tourism, calling to mind instead the days when the economy of Guardamar relied on fishing and the dunes were a recent threat to the very survival of the town. These are the Casas de Babilònia, and although at the southernmost end of this part of the shore there are some bars and restaurants – shops are also close at hand, a few minutes’ walk away - the further north one ventures the less urban the surroundings become.
Access to the southern end of the beach is easy, and Calle Ingeniero Cordoniú is lined with parking spaces all along this kilometre-long stretch of fine golden sand. Little specific provision is made for those of limited mobility, but at the same time there are no steep slopes or steps involved.
During the summer there is a lifeguard service, a beach bar, toilets, drinking water fountains and a Red Cross first aid point at the northern end of the Playa de Babilonia.
This is one of the more accessible of Guardamar’s superb beaches, and is perfect for those looking to spend a while on the sand in a natural setting without having to walk too far through the picturesque dunes and pine trees. For those spending the whole day a cool-box is recommended!
To the north, when the row of houses ends, the beach becomes the Playa de los Viveros, while to the south, when the Parque Alfonso XIII is replaced by the town centre, it merges into Playa Centro.
