Extreme heat warnings as temperatures soar past 43ºC: Murcia weather forecast July 20-23

Aemet has activated orange alerts across the Region of Murcia as temperatures climb towards Thursday's peak

The Region of Murcia will spend much of this week under official heat warnings as the third heatwave of the summer takes hold. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has confirmed that inland areas will be under an orange alert for parts of the week, with the coast facing a yellow alert, and temperatures will climb steadily before reaching their highest point on Thursday.

There's also a small chance of afternoon storms building over the inland mountains on several days, along with some dust in the air.

Monday July 20

Skies will stay partly cloudy, with mostly mid and high level cloud. Cloud will build over the inland mountain ranges as the day goes on, and there's a chance of afternoon thunderstorms that could turn locally severe, bringing very strong gusts with them. There'll be some dust in the air too, with a small chance of a few muddy drops if any rain mixes with it.

Minimum temperatures will stay much the same as recent days, while maximums will start climbing. Winds will be light and variable, with moderate southerly gusts developing in the afternoon. Aemet hasn't classed today as part of the official heatwave, but that will change from tomorrow.

Tuesday July 21

This is the day the heatwave officially begins across the south-east of Spain. Skies will be cloudy, mainly with mid and high level cloud, and cloud will build over the inland mountains during the day, bringing another chance of locally severe afternoon storms. Dust will remain in the air, with the possibility of mud deposits again.

Temperatures will rise in most areas, though some spots will hold steady. Winds stay light and variable, with moderate southerly gusts in the afternoon. Aemet has forecast highs of up to 43°C and has put inland areas under an orange alert, with the coast under a yellow alert. The agency has flagged an important danger level during the middle of the day, particularly for anyone spending time outdoors and for people who are more vulnerable to the heat.

Wednesday July 22

Skies will be partly cloudy, with spells of mid and high level cloud. Cloud will build over the inland mountains again during the day, with a chance of afternoon storms. Dust will stay in suspension, with the possibility of mud deposits once more.

Temperatures will change very little from Tuesday, staying at similarly high levels across the Region. Winds remain light and variable, with moderate southerly gusts in the afternoon. Alerts are expected to stay in force across most of the Region as the heat continues to build towards Thursday's peak.

Thursday July 23

This will be the peak day of the heatwave. Aemet's latest figures point to highs of up to 47°C in Cieza, Archena, Molina de Segura, Alcantarilla and Santomera, with Murcia city reaching around 46°C.

Skies will stay partly cloudy, with spells of mid and high level cloud, and cloud will build over the inland mountains during the day. Dust will remain suspended in the air. Minimum temperatures will change very little, while maximums will rise further or hold at Wednesday's already high levels in some areas. Winds will stay light and variable, with moderate westerly gusts over the mountains.
