Águilas spruces up natural areas with new signs, seats and better access
A project to improve local trails boosts accessibility, comfort and environmental awareness
The natural trails in Águilas have had a welcome upgrade, thanks to a recently completed project by the Ayuntamiento de Águilas that focuses on preserving the area’s rural charm while making it more appealing for walkers and nature lovers.Eight popular routes across the municipality have been included in the improvements. These are the Camino de Agua Trail, Baladre Trail, Mayorales Trail, Marina de Cope Trail, GR-92 Trail, Cuatro Calas Trail and the Romería Trail. The aim has been to make these trails more enjoyable to explore, easier to follow and more accessible for everyone.
To do this, the ayuntamiento has installed 14 informative panels, 27 directional signs and 16 benches along the trails. In their words, “This signage will promote interconnection and mobility between the different trails and their cultural and tourist resources.”Accessibility has also been a clear priority. To help blind or visually impaired visitors explore the area more independently, all interpretive panels now feature “NaviLens” codes, which work with a mobile app to provide audio information and guidance.
There’s also been targeted work on the Camino de Agua Trail to make it easier to access, and a full maintenance and review plan has been created to help keep the entire network in good shape for the future.
To raise awareness about the beauty and environmental importance of these natural routes, 3,000 printed brochures have also been produced, with information about the Águilas Natural Trails Network, encouraging locals and visitors alike to discover or rediscover the area on foot. These are available at the Águilas Tourist Information Office.
The project has been co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, which contributed 63 per cent of the eligible costs, with the remaining 37 per cent provided by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia. It falls under the CAMPODER local development strategy, “TerritorioCampoder: Growing Together”, and was led by the Department of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies.With the improvements now complete, Águilas’ natural trails are ready to offer an even more enjoyable and inclusive experience to anyone keen to explore the great outdoors.

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
