Puerto de Mazarrón Today
The Puerto de Mazarrón is a fishing port 6km from the town of Mazarrón
The words Puerto de Mazarrón translate as Mazarrón port, and without further embellishment perfectly describe the relationship of the Puerto de Mazarrón with the town of Mazarrón: this is the port which services the Mazarrón municipality and is 6km from the town of Mazarrón.
The Region of Murcia is divided into 45 administrative districts, or municipalities, each with its own town hall and mayor. The Mazarrón municipality is located in the bottom-south-westerly corner of the region and covers an area of 318 square kilometres.
Over 30,000 people live in this one municipality, which has the highest percentage of foreign nationals in the whole of the region, due principally to the presence of the Camposol and Mazarrón Country Club urbanisations, which attract many thousands of international property owners, the British being the largest number.
The identity and essence of the Puerto de Mazarrón is inescapably combined with its location by the sea and attractions as a seaside destination, so the port area has a high density of apartment properties which enable the population to multiply fivefold during the busy months of summer, drawn by the 33 beaches spread along 35 kilometres of coastline, the Costa Cálida, together with an atmospheric and buzzing paseo marítimo/sporting port.
Tourism is the principal driver of the economy, and agriculture and fishing are also both important industries, the Puerto de Mazarrón still an active fishing port, with traditions and fiestas linked to its marine heritage.
The port celebrates the Fiestas of the Virgen del Carmen on the 16th July, taking the image of the Virgen out to sea in a fishing boat in marine romería, and the patron saint is San José, the fisherman of men.
The history of the Puerto de Mazarrón is also interlinked with the sea and two of the most important marine archaeological discoveries ever made in the Murcia Region were found in the port; two Phoenician boats, one of them in a remarkable state of preservation. The port also has an impressive Roman heritage, with a Roman villa lying on the edge of the Alamillo bay and a salt-fish sauce factory which is now a museum, just behind the fishing port.
The port is popular with ex-pat property buyers who enjoy its proximity to the sea and offers satisfactory levels of shopping facilities, medical services, restaurants, leisure facilities, social clubs and support for the ex-pat residents who choose to make it their home in the sun or second home.
Where is the Puerto de Mazarrón?
The Puerto de Mazarrón is 70km from the capital City of the Murcia Region; Murcia City and is well connected to Cartagena and the town of Mazarrón. It is approximately 45 minutes from San Javier airport.
