Mercadona announces its summer opening hours in Spain
The supermarket chain will open on Sundays and holidays in most Spanish tourist destinations
Sunday opening hours are something of a controversial topic here in Spain. Many people argue that staff are well entitled to have this weekend day off throughout the year, while others feel it’s a bit of a nuisance, especially for holidaymakers arriving on a late Saturday flight.
Whichever side of the fence you’re on, once June rolls around most of the larger shops and supermarkets begin to open seven days a week, at least in the touristy areas. Mercadona, which ranks year after year as Spain’s favourite grocery store, is coming a little late to the party, but it has just announced new summer opening times beginning on Monday June 24.
Just to note, the revised hours don’t come into effect until Tuesday June 25 in the Valencian Community and Catalonia due to the celebration of the San Juan fiestas the previous weekend.
Across the board, Mercadona will now open between 9am and 10pm, which is 30 minutes later than its usual 9.30pm closing the rest of the year.
At the same time, and following in the footsteps of other supermarkets such as Alcampo, Carrefour and El Corte Inglés, during the summer months and in certain stores, Mercadona will even open on Sundays and holidays.
You’ll need to check the website to see if your local grocery store is included, but from Sunday June 30, 340 Mercadonas in “high-traffic” tourist towns will open their doors between 9am and 3pm.
These extended opening hours will run until September.
