Jumilla Wine Route, Bodega Cerrón
Fully ecological DOP Jumilla wines produced near Fuente-Álamo in the province of Albacete
Bodega Cerrón is a family-owned and run winery located close to the town of Fuente-Álamo in the province of Albacete, although its products are branded under the DOP Jumilla label.
The vineyards are among the highest within the Jumilla denomination, with the terroir of La Muela lying at up to 1,050 metres above sea level although most of the vines are at altitudes of between 850 and 960 metres. Planted mainly on north-facing slopes, they give extremely high yields of top quality grapes, and are overseen by the fourth generation of the family using fully ecological methods.
It was from their grandparents that the current management acquired the knowledge required to cultivate the local Monastrell vines and turn the fruit into highly prized wine, while their parents pioneered the efforts which gained full ecological certification for the winery.
One of the aims of Bodega Cerrón is to conserve the heritage of the area in terms of its plant life, salvaging centuries-old vines and restoring them to production after years of neglect. Each small area of vines is used to produce its own wine, making it possible to identify the products with specific “micro-vineyards”.
One of the key factors in the quality of the wines of Bodega Cerrón is the soil, containing rough limestone and plenty of stones and rocks which help to preserve moisture in the heat of summer. The shaded north-facing slopes allow the grapes more time to ripen with a fine balance of acidity, alcohol and fruitiness, and this slight delay in the growth of the Monastrell and Petit Verdot varieties give the wines an unusal freshness and acidity.
Visiting Bodega Cerrón
Two standard tours of the winery are offered between November and May.
The first is the “Experieince con Cata de Barricas”, which consists of the following:
- Tours of the 100year-old Monastrell Pie Franco vineyard and the winery.
- Guided tasting of 4 wines.
- Tasting of 4 to 6 wines form the barrel, both whites and reds from different vineyards.
- Samples of 7 or 8 cheeses made from the milk of “Manchega” sheep and MurcianoGranadino goat.
The visit lasts approximately 3 hours and is priced at 35 euros per head.
The “Experiencia Completa, Cata de Barricas y Vinos de Parcela” includes all of the above but with an even wider variety of wines, and is priced at 65 euros per head.
