Corvera airport rebounds in November with a surge in passenger numbers
A promising recovery for Murcia’s International Airport despite seasonal challenges
The Murcia Region International Airport (AIRM), commonly known as Corvera Airport, made a notable recovery in November, reversing two consecutive months of declining passenger numbers. The terminal saw a 33% increase in passengers compared to November 2023, with 31,490 travellers passing through its gates.
While this rebound is encouraging, it remains below the record-breaking November of 2019, Corvera’s inaugural year, showing a 22.5% decrease in the number of passengers compared to pre-pandemic levels.
This November marked the start of Corvera’s reduced autumn-winter schedule, with flights scaled back from 23 destinations to just 9. This seasonal adjustment significantly impacted passenger numbers, which fell to a third of October’s total. Despite this, November proved to be a record-breaking month for operations, with 413 flights – a 49.1% increase compared to the previous November and 10.1% higher than November 2019.
Year-to-date performance
From January to November, Corvera Airport reported growth in both operations and passenger numbers. A total of 6,730 flights were recorded, a 5% increase from the same period in 2023, and 873,335 passengers passed through the airport, a rise of 2.8%.
However, as almost always, the numbers still trail behind 2019, with a 17.1% decline in flights and an 11.7% drop in passenger traffic compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Of the 873,335 passengers registered so far this year, 868,663 were commercial passengers. The majority, 761,080, were international travellers – a figure virtually unchanged from 2023, with only a slight 0.3% dip.
In contrast, the domestic market has shown significant growth, with 107,583 passengers, a remarkable 37.3% increase.
Corvera Airport’s performance in November reflects its resilience amid seasonal and post-pandemic challenges. With its operational capacity on the rise and a promising domestic market, the airport is slowly, gradually hoping to position itself as a vital hub for the Region of Murcia.
As 2025 approaches, stakeholders will be keenly watching how these trends evolve, especially as the airport prepares to welcome back an expanded schedule in the spring and summer months.
