Arrest made after Irishman stabbed with box cutter in Orihuela Costa
The suspect, also Irish, has been charged with attempted murder following the La Zenia attack

Almost a month after a young Irishman was hospitalised following a frenzied attack in the Orihuela Costa area of La Zenia, the Guardia Civil have arrested a 58-year-old suspect, also Irish, on suspicion of attempted murder.
The investigation began in the early hours of June 15 when the victim was found bleeding profusely from the neck on Calle Jalón, a quiet residential road running parallel to Las Estacas Rambla, near Zenia Boulevard shopping centre.
Police have since learned that the 28-year-old Irishman was approached from behind while urinating and was stabbed in the neck with a box cutter. He was rushed to Torrevieja University Hospital for emergency surgery which ultimately saved his life.
Initially, the victim admitted to knowing his attacker, but refused to name him or give any details about the incident for fear of reprisal.
However, he later identified the suspect, who had by this time fled from his home. But the investigation continued and Orihuela Costa Local Police eventually caught up with the man in a local park on June 30, where he was arrested.Since the suspect lacked identification, collaboration with the Irish authorities was crucial, as they facilitated a fingerprint check. This also confirmed that the suspect has a long criminal record in Ireland for serious crimes, including homicide with a firearm and drug trafficking.
Despite being charged with attempted murder at the Orihuela Court, the 58-year-old has been released on bail with a restraining order against the victim.
