17-year-old diver dies off Bolnuevo coast
The teenager was found at a depth of 14 metres near the islet of Cueva de Lobos

A 17-year-old freediver was found dead this Thursday July 10 after disappearing off the coast of Bolnuevo, in the municipality of Mazarrón. His body was found at a depth of around 14 metres near the islet of Cueva de Lobos.
Emergency services were alerted at 11.45am by a passing boat whose crew noticed a man in a kayak asking for help. The man was searching for his son, who had been diving in the area. He had found only the boy’s speargun floating on the surface.
The Copla Plan lifeguards, Mazarrón Civil Protection, and the Local Police were deployed to the scene. The teenager was found shortly afterwards, trapped underwater. The Guardia Civil’s specialist diving unit (GEAS) was activated to recover the body.
Freediving to harpoon fish or other marine animals is a traditional pastime on the Mediterranean coast, but is not without its risks, especially for those who are less experienced.
Medical teams who were sent to the area also attended to the deceased’s family members, while a Red Cross boat transported the GEAS divers to the site for the extraction. The body was later transferred to port.
